I’m creating a course, and after each lesson I want to send students to Mochi to do flashcards. So there will be Lesson 1 Flashcards, Lesson 2 Flashcards, etc.

I’ve read the documentation, but something isn’t clicking. I’m not fully understanding the user flow.

After each lesson, I would give the student a share link to a published deck. What happens next? (I’m on a Pro trial, but I don't see a link to publish, so I can’t test this.)

• On a free account, a student needs to pick a single platform right, and then the will need register an account, but I need to give clear instructions.
• Then, does the student need to copy the deck into their own workspace or do they work from a public deck?
• Are these decks public/searchable or private and only viewable to those with a link?
• Can/should they download all lesson decks at once, or is it better to do them one at a time? (This ties into the next part.)

What I want is for the student to go through all the cards for the current lesson, plus review cards from previous lessons. I do not want cards from future lessons mixed in. How does this actually work in practice? For example, if someone is doing Lesson 2 cards:

• Do due cards from Lesson 1 get mixed into the Lesson 2 session? (I do not want this scenario)
• I want students to learn Lesson 2 cards first, then Lesson 1 cards can get mixed in. How does this work?

It’s important to me that students reach 100% knowledge for a lesson before moving on within the same session, but I’m confused about how Mochi handles this and how I should instruct the student step by step.

For example, it looks like new cards keep cycling until I click “Add to Review” on each one. (Is this correct?) Then I would tell them to click “Review missed.” But:

• Do cards keep cycling until they reach 100%?
• Or is it possible to reach “finished reviewing missed cards” even if they didn’t get everything right?
• What do I tell students to do?

Separately, even if they reach 100%, they’ll forget over time. I want those cards to come back and be mixed into future lessons. How does that work exactly?

• Which cards come back? Assuming they went through all cards and got 100% by the end of the previous session, what determines when and which cards reappear?

I'm probably not understanding something, so you can just tell me how to achieve what I want to achieve, assuming it's possible.

The share button is on the deck page at the top right (it's just an icon, a box with an up arrow inside, kind of easy to miss if you're not looking for it).

They don't need to register an account to use the free version, but they will be limited to a single platform/device.

Yes they need to copy the deck to actually review it through the spaced repetition system.

They are not searchable, only viewable to those with a link.

Based on what you have said you wanted to do, I would send them each lesson individually at the time that you want them to review them. If they download all of the decks at once, then all of the cards from all of the decks will show up in the "New cards" section together.

The cards from the Lesson 2 deck will appear in the "New cards" section after the deck has been saved to their workspace. At this point all of the cards in the Lesson 1 deck should have already been learned and moved from "New cards" to long term scheduling (ie showing in "Due today") at some earlier time (I assume).

I want students to learn Lesson 2 cards first, then Lesson 1 cards can get mixed in. How does this work?

Once the Lesson 2 deck is saved, the cards will appear in the "New cards" queue. Once that queue is complete and all of the cards have been graduated to long term scheduling, they will begin to appear in "Due today" (at first they will be scheduled immediately to be due on the same day that they are learned, then gradually the spacing will increase to 3, 5, 10 days etc.)

That is correct. I'm actually not sure what you mean by "Review missed."

A card will continue to appear in the "New cards" queue until "Add to reviews" is pressed.

I'm not actually sure what you mean by that. A card will never leave the "New cards" queue until the "Add to reviews" button is pressed.

That is exactly what the spaced repetition system is designed for! Cards will be scheduled for review on future dates (showing up in "Due today"), depending on how well the student knows the material (this is based on their answer to previous reviews).

All of the cards that were "Added to reviews" in the "New cards" queue will enter the scheduling system and appear in "Due today". At first, on the same day, then on future dates. Cards that are reviewed in "Due today" will be scheduled to be reviewed again on a future date (depending on the number of reviews historically and recall rate for those reviews).

When first seeing new cards, in the "learn" phase, I get two options: "Again" and "Add to Review". It seems here that the cards will cycle forever until I hit Add to Review on all of them. Is this correct? If so, is the idea here that the students get 100% correct at this early stage before moving on? Or is the idea that they hit add to review simply after becoming familiar with them, but not necessarily getting them all right? What do I communicate to the students at this stage?

The next step the app says "Finished learning cards. Now let's review the cards you've learned." If I now go through them again, I get another prompt to review one more time, but after that it says "Finished reviewing missed cards. Enjoy your day!" The thing is, I want the student to not stop reviewing for that session until they get 100%. Do I tell them that if they got some wrong to cram?

I'm assuming until now, that the only cards the student is seeing is the latest lesson deck, let's say lesson 2, so once they are done, when/where do the prev. lesson cards get mixed in?

Regarding the issue of registered/free user. Can a user be on a free plan & registered, or is registration a pro option?

When you say they can only be on one device, I'm assuming they will initially click on the link, and go to a browser, but I want to give them the option to download the apps. Can they move to a different device?

Sorry so many questions, but I have to understand how every step works, and I'm get a bit overwhelmed sometimes.

That's correct.

Mochi is primarily a self study tool, so it is up to the user to determine when they want to add a card to the long term review schedule. It is not necessary to be 100% familiar with the material before adding it to the review schedule. The spaced repetition algorithm will determine appropriate scheduling based on familiarity.

I think there is some confusion here. When you finish reviewing the cards in "Due today" it will prompt you to re-review any cards you missed during that review session. Only after re-reviewing those cards will you see a "Finished reviewing missed cards" screen.

The review session for "Due today" will not end until all cards are marked as "Remembered." There's no need to do additional reviews through a cram session.

You can register and still be on the free plan, but there is no reason to register unless you want to subscribe to pro. In other worse registering for an account without subscribing doesn't do anything for you or unlock any features.

Which browser are you using? I think Firefox breaks the app in private browsing mode because some browser features are disabled by default in that mode. Chrome incognito mode should work, though.

Without a pro subscription the only way to move to a different device is to export their decks from the browser and import them into the desktop app. In fact, you could even just send the export to your students directly instead of the share link. https://mochi.cards/docs/import-and-export/exporting/

Ok, this is all great! I'm starting to get it, and I'll play around now, but now I'm wondering after all this if going with an embed might solve some of this user single-device question.

That said, I tried a few, but was only able to get it to work with one wordpress plugin and I couldn't control the size of the window (do you have a recommendation of how to best implement this?).

Given my use-case above, are there any downsides that I can't now forsee to embedding vs. sending users to a new browser page or an app? This seems like it might be cleaner and keep people on my course page.

One more embed question: Can light mode be forced?
